Global Ambassadors day two

Global Ambassadors day 2...all rained out!

Today was a nasty day....sorry there is just no other way to put it. Once we got off the subway in the Bronx we had to swim our way up to the Fordham University Campus where we all arrived soaking wet but also glad that Prof. Mark Naison aka Notorious Phd awaited with freshly delivered food. First insight of the day? Dominican food in the BX tastes good even when your soaking wet and cold. Once small talk had concluded and the food had been consumed it was on to the auditorium for a mtg with Fordham University and High School students from the Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom HS and a discussion on politics and the election of Donald Trump from a global perspective. While the discussion was passionate and fruitful it took place in a room full of deeply concerned and frightened people, none of whom could tell just what the future holds for all of us. Are mass deportations in the US forthcoming? How should we all react if they do? Do we all begin hiding people in our basements? Are we all willing to get arrested to stand up for what´s right? On a more personal level, what about our youth exchange programs? Will we have to suspend them for the next four years? If the Trump administration follows through with its threats to ban Muslims from the United States we will certainly have to. Recent Trump cabinet appointments paint a very ominous picture and as i sit here, i can´t quite shake the slightly terrified feeling that continues to linger ever since that faithful election night.

We are about to leave the Bronx to meet up with the rest of the Ambassadors in Chinatown for some of that world famous Chinese food. Lord knows we need to have a positive experience before this day ends.

Globale Botschafter Tag 2 ... völlig verregnet!

Heute war ein böser Tag .... sorry man kann es nicht anders formulieren. Nachdem wir die U Bahn in der Bronx verließen, mussten wir zum Campus der Fordham University schwimmen, wo wir alle zwar klitschnass ankamen, allerdings auch froh darüber, dass Prof. Mark Naison alias Notorious Phd mit frisch zubereiteter Nahrung auf uns wartete. Erste Einsicht des Tages? Dominikanisches Essen in der BX schmeckt auch wenn man Nass und Kalt ist während man es isst. Nachdem die kleinen Gespräche ein Ende fanden und das Essen konsumiert war, gingen wir weiter ins Auditorium für ein Mtg mit Fordham University und High School Studenten aus der Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School und eine Diskussion über Politik und die Wahl von Donald Trump aus globaler Perspektive auf uns wartete. Während die Diskussion leidenschaftlich und interessant war, fand sie in einem Raum voller zutiefst besorgter und verängstigter Menschen statt, von denen keiner genau sagen konnte, wie die Zukunft für uns alle aussehen wird. Wird es Massendeportationen in den USA geben? Wie sollen wir alle reagieren, wenn sie tatsächlich kommen? Fangen wir alle an, Menschen in unseren Kellern zu verstecken? Sind wir alle bereit, verhaftet zu werden, um für das einzustehen was richtig ist? Auf persönlicher Ebene, was ist mit unseren Jugendaustauschprogrammen? Müssen wir sie für die nächsten vier Jahre aussetzen? Wenn die Trump-Administration ihre Drohungen Muslime aus den Vereinigten Staaten zu verbannen wahr macht, werden wir es sicher tun müssen. Jüngste Trump-Kabinett appointments malen ein sehr ominöses Bild und wie ich hier sitze, kann ich das leicht verängstigt Gefühl das mich seit der Wahl Nacht plagt einfach nicht schütteln.

Wir sind im Begriff, die Bronx zu verlassen, um uns mit dem Rest der Globalen Botschafter in Chinatown zu treffen, für ein wenig von dem so weltberühmten Essen dort. Lord knows, wir brauchen eine positive Erfahrung bevor dieser Tag zu Ende geht.
